SOMETIMES, WE'RE HAPPY THAT OUR LITTLE CORNER OF ROATAN stays peaceful and quiet — that it remains a well-kept secret away from the busy end of the island’s West End. But, then, we also love to share our unique Caribbean lifestyle with guests who come to Ocean Breeze Villa. It’s a tricky balancing act to keep our world here on the East End in its normally tranquil state while also hoping that visitors in search of the perfect tropical getaway find their way to Oakridge and the other communities on the “chill” side of Roatan.
Well, Islands, a digital travel magazine, just recently did a short travel piece on the East End, and it highlighted the Villa, and our very authentic “district,” away from the chaos of the more “touristy” end of Roatan near Coxen Hole. The magazine also touched on the East End’s iconic Tiki Boat and wrote about our incredible fishing, diving and snorkeling. They even mentioned our wonderful, Creole-inspired food that we serve to guests who book a full-service stay at the Villa.
Most importantly, though, the magazine noted that the East End probably isn’t for everybody. It’s certainly not for the visitor who’s seeking the busy beaches and the loud music of the night clubs on the West End. And it’s not for the “condo commandos,” either, who want to come and stay amid the busy world of the tourist village and the resorts. That’s not us. That’s not what the East End is all about.
Instead, as the magazine notes, this place is for the adventurer. It’s for visitors who want to experience a bit about what life is really like on Roatan, and for people who want to interact with the locals and expats who dearly love this place and have made our lives next to the sea. The East End is for the wandering fly fisher, or the diver who wants to get away from the hordes of other divers. It’s for the kite surfer who wants to glide over emerald flats or the snorkeler who’s not afraid to dip a toe in the water alongside our beautiful sharks and rays.
Centuries ago, the East End was a pirate stronghold, and, while that lifestyle is long gone from Roatan, the pioneering spirit that inspired all that high-seas larceny is still here for anyone who wants to come and see it for themselves. Sure, we have our share of nice resorts that’ll take great care of you, but, for the most part, it’s the destinations like Ocean Breeze Villa that keep the right kind of guests coming back to the East End.
If you want that raked sandy beach and the plastic wrist band so you know which buffet line to wait in, you might not find what you’re after on the East End. But if you want to slow down and feel what life is really like in our corner of the Caribbean, Islands magazine just gave you the roadmap to the East End.
And we’d love to host you at the Villa. Bring your curiosity. Bring your sense of adventure. But, above all, bring your desire to see the real Roatan. We can’t wait to see you.
