One of the safest islands in the Caribbean

Roatan takes tourist safety seriously

OUR BEAUTIFUL ISLAND of Roatan, perfectly situated in the Caribbean Sea, just off the coast of Honduras, is a lot of things to a lot of people. But, contrary to what you may be hearing in the news lately as the American and Honduran governments posture and argue over immigration and potential deportations under a new American regime, Roatan is not a dangerous destination.

And, where we are at
Ocean Breeze Villa, we’re even more safe and secure. Roatan’s quiet East End is perhaps the safest part of the island. And, with the villa located on an island of its own — and with a caretaker on the property at all times — we never worry about our safety.

Known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs, Roatan is the exception to the rule when traveling to Honduras. Yes, the mainland can be gritty and, in some areas, lawlessness and chaos is common. But that’s not Roatan.

Tourism is our prime industry

Roatan is a safe place to visit. The island has a low crime rate, and the people are friendly and welcoming. Consider the following, and feel good about planning your trip to Roatan and, hopefully, to the Villa:

  • Low Crime Rate: Roatan has one of the lowest crime rates in the Caribbean. The island is patrolled by a well-trained and professional police force that is committed to protecting tourists and residents alike.
  • Friendly People: The people of Roatan are known for their warmth and hospitality. They are always happy to welcome visitors and will go out of their way to make you feel safe and comfortable.
  • Strong Tourism Industry: Tourism is one of the main industries on Roatan, so the island is well-equipped to handle visitors. There are many hotels, restaurants, and tour operators that are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for their guests.
  • Government Support: The Honduran government is committed to promoting tourism on Roatan and has taken steps to ensure the island is safe for visitors. This includes increasing police presence, improving infrastructure, and working with local businesses to create a safe environment for tourists.

Be smart and be safe

While no place is entirely free of crime, Roatan is a very safe destination for tourists. By taking a few simple precautions, you can further reduce your risk of becoming a victim of crime — particularly if you visit areas of the island with large crowds (that you very likely won’t encounter on the East End!):

  • Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to the people and activities around you, and avoid walking alone at night.
  • Keep your valuables safe: Don't carry large amounts of cash, and keep your passport and other important documents in a secure place.
  • Be respectful of the local culture: Dress modestly in public areas and avoid behaving in a way that could be offensive to locals.

Make yourself at home at the Villa

Remember, too, when you visit the Villa or our spacious Guesthouse, you should make yourself completely at home. We provide secure storage for all valuables, and our crack housekeeping team and caretaker always have your security and safety in mind. We love our little island, and we’re proud to welcome visitors — you’re important to us. The last thing we want is for you to feel unsafe. That’s why we go out of our way to make sure every visitor to the Villa is very well taken care of. Come see us and experience one of the safest destinations in the tropics.
